Frequently asked questions
Why can I get a tax rebate for owning patents?
HMRC has a scheme called “Patent Box” that lets UK companies pay 10% Corporation Tax on profits earned from patented inventions, or exclusive licenses of patented inventions, instead of the usual 25% Rate.
What if my Patents are pending?
Once a patent is granted, you’ll be able to claim retrospectively for any profits earned while it was pending, for up to six years.
Does it matter where my patent is registered?
Currently, the Patent Box scheme applies to patents granted by the UK Intellectual Property Office, the European Patent Office, and certain EEA national offices. We can help get a clearer picture of your intellectual property portfolio, even if you have US Patents and help you explore options.
Can I claim if I license a patent?
If your company holds an exclusive licence to a qualifying patent and actively exploits it, you may be eligible, as well. If you license your patent out to someone else, you could get a 10% Corporation Tax rate on the profits generated from the licensing fees.
Do I need to file my rebate paperwork at a particular time?
You need to file within two years of the end of the accounting period you want relief to start from. Our experts can help you with this process and make sure that your accounting stays up to date, to maximise your tax rebates.
How can I start?
Just click through the form and fill in your details, so that one of our experts can reach out to you and help you start the process.
